PA-3E Dell 90W Slimline Latitude, Inspiron, Precision, Studio, Vostro and XPS Laptop AC Adapters

Dell recently started using slimline ac power adapters for the more current notebooks requiring a 90W laptop ac adapter. The most recognizable part no. would definitely have to be the PA-3E family. The PA-3E is the genuine replacement to previous dell PA-10 and is still compatible in models like the latitude, precision, vostro, studio and XPS which require 90 watts. The only difference is the newer one's are slim, about half the size of the dell's last laptop ac adapter.

After much research and getting confirmation by Dell, these PA-3E can go under any of these part numbers: PA-3E, PA3-E, WK890, Y807G, 330-1826, Y808G, 330-1825, 330-1828, D094H, 330-1827, C120H, CM889, FA90PE1-00, DA90PE1-00, ADP-90VH B, WK890.

On a original dell laptop ac adapter you will find the following specs: Voltage: 19.5V and output power 90W ~ 4.62A. *Most of the notebooks using this part number require a unique 3-prong type of power cord which is supplied with the part when you purchase it from any company.*

Here is a more extensive list of compatible notebook computers that can use the PA-3E:
Dell Latitude E4200, E4300, E5400, E5500, E6400, E6400 ATG, E6500, XT2, XT2 XFR series. The Dell Precision M2400, M4400 and Dell Studio XPS13, 15, 1535, 1536, 1537, 1555, 17, 1735, 1737 series. 463955-001 KG298AA HP 90W Smart Pin Dongle AC Adapter Updated Compatibility

Awhile back I wrote about the 90W KG298AA#ABA laptop ac adapter and ironically was recently notified by HP and Compaq that this power adapter spare part number was updated to 463955-001 which just includes a special dongle making it work with even more PC's. For anybody wondering about the size, it's just a 1" tiny cable you connect.

So now we know that part #'s KG298AA is now being sold under 463955-001 and here is the info exactly off the HP's master reference guide list: "90W AC Smart Tip power supply adapter - 100-240VAC input, 47-63Hz - 19.0VDC output, 4.74A, 90 watts, with power factor correction (PFC) - Includes smart tip dongle."

I went through and sorted the working list of laptops into something more reading friendly. If this information can help even just 1 person, then it'd be all worth it and my job is done. *Don't forget that 463955-001 is now the correct notebook ac part number for all of the laptop computer models and series below:

Compaq Presario A900 C700 CQ50-100 CQ60-100 CQ60-200 CQ60-300 CQ61-100 CQ70-100 CQ70-200 CQ71-100 F500 F700 V6500 V6600 notebooks.

KG298AA HP Compaq Smart-Tip 90W AC Adapter

Hans, my dear, I’m afraid we’ve had a misunderstanding.

I told you once that “wherever I find myself, I can adapt”, apparently you took that to mean it’d be no problem for me if we moved into a tree house in a remote corner of the Democratic Republic of the Toshiban Jungle to live out your dream.

Now, I admit tropical living has its charms. (There’s always a new aroma on the air and I'd never be able to experience this back home... I've never seen so many brightly colored transforming animals before!) But when I said “I can adapt” all I really meant was that I had a couple extra HP KG298AA 90W laptop adapters for my notebook, and I keep one in the car and the other at work. So, you know, if I was at starbucks or something important! - I could do a little emailing without worrying about my battery dying and my coffee from getting cold.

Funny, now, to think that a computers battery charge was ever even on my top thousand worries! Since we’ve lived in Toshiban Jungles, I’ve been at robbed four times, I’ve suffered an animal trampling, and I even had a close call with an active volcano on what was supposed to be our “romantic anniversary picnic” as I’m sure you’ll remember.

Hans, I know a little something about compatibility. You know the notebook PC I had back home? That 17" HP laptop you bought
for me? Well, you should have seen it the KG298AA#ABA plugged into one. That was compatibility, right there. After thinking back on it now, I don’t know why I couldn’t see that we just didn’t have it.

Notebook Computer Power Adapter Basics

It seems that the world now revolves around laptop ac adapters or 'power adapters' as they tend to be called. There are several basic types - despite the fact that the plugs to the equipment may be identical THESE CAN GENERALLY NOT BE INTERCHANGED. The type (AC or DC), voltage, current capacity, and polarity are all critical to proper operation of the equipment. Use of an improper adapter or even just reverse polarity can permanently damage or destroy the device. Most equipment is protected against stupidity to a greater or lessor degree but don't count on it.

The most common problems are due to failure of the output cable due to flexing at either the adapter or output plug end.

1. Notebook ac adapter: However, only if the output is stated to be 'AC' does the device consist of only a "stepdown". These adapters typically put out anywhere from 3 to 20 VAC or more at 50 mA to 3 A or more. The most common range from 6 to 15 VAC at less than 1 A. The regulation is typically very poor so that an adapter rated at 12 VAC may put out 15 VAC with no load and drop to less than 12 VAC at rated load.

2. Laptop DC Power Pack: In addition to a "step down", these power supplies include at the very least a rectifier and filter capacitor. There may be additional regulation but most often there is none. Thus, while the output is DC, the powered equipment will almost always include an electronic regulation. As above, you may find bad connections or a blown fuse or thermal fuse inside the adapter but the most common problems are with the cable.

3. Switching Laptop AC Adapters: These are complete low power AC-DC converters using a high frequency inverter. Most common applications are laptop computers and notebooks. The output(s) will be fairly well regulated and these will often accept universal power - 90-250 V AC or DC.

*Internal cable problems predominate but failures of the switching power supply components are also possible. If the output is dead and you have eliminated the cable as a possible problem or the output is cycling on and off at approximately a 1 second rate, then some part of the switching power supply may be bad. In the first case, it could be a blown fuse, bad startup resistor, shorted/open semiconductors, bad controller, or other components. If the output is cycling, it could be a shorted diode or capacitor, or a bad controller. It may just be easier buying a new one at the good prices these days in my opinion.

A family member of mine has a Dell XPS M1330 laptop pc and asked if I could get them a new power adapter since the current one broke somehow (I find it easier not to ask questions sometimes lol). Now back to the dell notebook ac.
